Will Sorrento fund my business?
Sorrento Ventures is a venture capital firm. We make equity investments into companies that demonstrate an ability to grow rapidly within five years to dominate a market segment, achieve annual revenues of at least $50,000,000 and deliver a return of five to seven times our principal investment. Loans to help purchase inventory, reduce debt, or to start a small business are probably better handled by local financial institutions such as a bank or by investment by angel investors, friends and family.
In what sort of companies does Sorrento like to invest its time
and capital?
We prefer to invest in experienced management teams involved with early-stage technology companies which have significant barriers to entry which are focused on very large market opportunities. Our investment focus is primarily on Healthcare (Biotechnology, Medical devices, Drug Discovery and Delivery), Technology (Communications, Computer Hardware Enterprise Software and Electronics), Internet (enabling Technologies and ASP models) and Specialty Retail.
What does Sorrento look for?
Sorrento seeks to back outstanding entrepreneurs with a strong desire to succeed. We look for industry knowledge, the ability to think and react quickly to changing markets and competitors, and the ability to attract an outstanding team to create long-term wealth for founders, employees and shareholders.
What is the best way to get introduced to Sorrento?
Compelling business opportunities present themselves in many ways. Priority is always given, however, to companies with well-constructed business plans and to individuals referred by limited partners, entrepreneurs, lawyers, accountants, consultants or other professionals who are well known to our firm.
How active is Sorrento with its portfolio companies?
We work harder supporting our portfolio companies than we do in identifying promising new opportunities . We take our investment and advisory roles very seriously and will work with management teams to customize our involvement to meet the respective requirements of each portfolio company.
Does Sorrento always take a board seat?
We almost always serve on the board of directors of our early stage portfolio companies. The specifics of board composition depend on investment size, syndicate and company needs. In later stage companies, Sorrento often gives up its board seat and merely retains observation rights.
